Chennai Corporation Death Certificate Download 2026: Online Steps

Short answer: you can download a Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) death certificate online without visiting any office. For deaths registered from 2018 onwards, sign in on the GCC death certificate portal at gccservices.in/crs/death with your mobile number and OTP, or use the Tamil Nadu CRS portal (crstn.org). For older records, use the GCC online verification and print page with the registration number, the name and the date of death. The downloaded PDF is computer generated and does not need a seal or signature.

Tamil Nadu moved every birth and death registration to the common CRS software from 1 January 2018. The state’s FAQ says the public can download these certificates any time, any number of copies, without any payment.
How to Download from the GCC Death Certificate Portal
- Open gccservices.in/crs/death.
- First time: register with your name, mobile number and address. Already registered: choose login.
- Enter your mobile number and the OTP sent to it.
- Search for the death record and download the PDF certificate.
- Check the name, date of death, place of death and parents’ names before you use it.
The OTP goes to the mobile number you enter, so family members abroad usually need someone with an Indian mobile number, or must keep their Indian number active for SMS.
How to Print an Older Record (Verification Page)
The Greater Chennai Corporation also runs an online facility for verification or printing of death certificates on chennaicorporation.gov.in. It asks for:
- Registration number
- Name of the deceased
- Date of death (day, month, year)
- Gender
- Place of death: home or others, hospital, or not known
- Name of father and name of mother
- The verification number shown on screen
Every field must match the register exactly. If the search fails, try the spelling used in the hospital records, or the initial before the name, as many Chennai records use it.
Is the Downloaded Certificate Valid?
Yes. GCC states that the certificate is computer generated and does not require any seal or signature, and that its authenticity can be verified on the same GCC page. Banks, insurers and the Revenue Department accept it for most purposes. Print it in colour and keep the PDF.
Registering a Death in Chennai
- Time limit: a death should be reported within 21 days of the date it happened.
- Hospital deaths: the hospital reports the death to the registrar through the CRS portal.
- Deaths at home: the head of the household, or the nearest relative present, must report it to the registrar.
- Where: a death is registered only at the place where it happened. Within the corporation, the registrar is the Sanitary Inspector of the zone.

Delayed registration is where most families get stuck, because the RDO order needs proof of death, an enquiry and a non-availability record from the registrar. Start early if the certificate is needed for property or a legal heir certificate.
Correcting a Death Certificate
If a name, date or parent’s name is wrong, apply to the registrar of the zone where the death was registered, with proof of the correct details such as the deceased’s Aadhaar, ration card, school certificate or hospital records. Do not use a certificate with wrong details for property or bank work; a mismatch with other records is the most common reason a legal heir certificate or a patta transfer is held up.
WhatsApp and App Downloads
In 2026 the Greater Chennai Corporation announced certificate downloads through WhatsApp, and certificates have also been available through the Namma Chennai app. Reports differ on whether death certificates are covered on WhatsApp yet, so use the number published on GCC’s official website or official social media handle, and never share OTPs with anyone else.
